How does Herd work?
Herd is a safety app. It keeps you connected by letting you unlock your saved contacts on any borrowed smartphone, tablet, or browser.
When you don’t have your phone you can still text, call, email, and send location pins to anyone you need, right in the app.
Why do I need Herd?
Phones get lost, broken, forgotten, and stolen. Batteries run out.
Herd ensures no one is out of touch while separated from friends and family.
I’ll just borrow a phone.
Right. But who can you actually dial? We spend time with dozens of people but can’t reach most of them without our own contacts.
Remember, your mom or dad may be cities, or even states, away.
Whether you’re at a concert, festival, or crowded game, being cut off from your group is unsafe. Isolation puts you at risk for becoming a target or making desperate decisions.
With Herd, you can always reach the people who can reach you fastest — often those you’ve been separated from or are trying to meet up with.
Who needs Herd?
Anyone with a smartphone — but it’s a must for teens, college students, and older adults. If you rely on a device to stay connected, you need Herd as your backup plan.
How do I sign up?
Verify your device: Tap “Sign up” and enter your phone number.
Build your herd. Add numbers or emails for your closest friends and family. Nicknames and initials are fine.
Lock it in: Take a photo so you can use face recognition to unlock your contacts when you need them.
That’s it?
Yes. If you want, select an elephant design for each contact. They bring your herd to life on your My Herd page. Or skip this step and customize them later.
Then what?
Nothing — until you need Herd. Your contacts are fully encrypted and stored safely in the cloud. Private, secure, reliable, and ready when you need them.
How do I access my contacts?
- 01Borrow any smart device: Open a browser and type goherd.app or Herd safety app.
- 02Sign in securely: Tap “Reach my people” and use your face to unlock your contacts.
- 03Connect and clear: Text, call, email, or pin your location. Click Sign out.

Why we built Herd.
2005 - 2026
Jimmy Gracey was a dearly loved college student at the University of Alabama and a family friend of Herd’s creators.
In March of 2026, Jimmy was at a venue when a known pickpocket stole his phone; the police recovered it the next day. Jimmy became separated from his friends. Although he was surrounded by people he could borrow phones from, he didn’t have the numbers for his local friends. Jimmy lost his life that night in a tragedy that could’ve been prevented.
We want everyone to be able to reach their people when they’re alone and without their phones.
The Herd elephant was chosen in honor of Jimmy — an elephant is his university’s mascot.

Ask the right person
Someone your age, an acquaintance, a parent with kids, a security guard, or law enforcement.
“I lost my phone. Can I borrow yours to call for a ride?”

Have them open a browser
It takes 30 seconds to text, call, email, or send location pins from this point.
“My contacts are in a safety app. Can you open a browser? It’ll be quick.”

Sign out when you’re done
Tap Sign out, or just close the browser. If you forget — we close it for you.

Be ready to help.
A text or email from Herd clearly shows who’s reaching out:
“Mary is trying to reach you from the Herd Safety App.”
If on, location pins through Google Maps are attached to all texts and emails — so you know exactly where to find your person.
A text arrives 15 seconds before a phone call so you know to look for it.
An incoming phone call shows up as “Herd Safety App” so you always pick up.
You can reply to a text or email on the Herd app:
“I’ll be at your location in 10 minutes. Stay there.”
“We’ve been looking for you! Meet at the food trucks.”
